Climate Change
Jan 22, 2025 6:00 PM
Crafting Climate Solutions: As climate change and its harmful effects accelerate, so too does the urgency for effective climate action. Learn how various climate policy solutions work to stabilize the climate, and how they impact sustainability, justice, trade, energy and income disparity. Peter will explore our current climate trajectory, how recent legislation has improved our long-term outlook, and how Maine, as the only state in the world's largest economy with both senators on the bipartisan Senate Climate Solutions Caucus, can lead the nation and world in advocating a stabilized climate and a sustainable future.. Peter is the Maine State Coordinator for Citizens Climate Lobby, a nonpartisan grassroots organization focused on effective and equitable climate solutions. He serves as the liaison to the office of Senator Angus King (ME-I), and a long-time advocate for finding climate change solutions. He earned a degree in Physics and Engineering from Brown University and lives and works in Portland.

Feb 26, 2025 8:30 AM - 3:30 PM
Our volunteer opportunities are arranged to include everyone in the club who is available during the day on Wednesday, February 26. The volunteer possibilities are grouped by "Indoor" and "Outdoor" options to accommodate as many of us as possible. Also, anyone present can be outside at any time - as long or short as you are able - to cheer on the athletes. The shifts are divided up to allow for shortened time commitments, but if you are able, it would be helpful - but not required - to sign up for the full day. The attachment shows the full range of events and activities of th eentire Winter Games, but we are focusing our support to the snowshoe and cross-country ski events on Wednesday only at Pineland Farms in New Gloucester. |

Early Self-Detection and Prevention of Melanoma
Mar 05, 2025 6:00 PM
Stephen Fine, founder and president of the Melanoma Education Foundation, attended colleges in the Boston area, receiving a doctorate in chemistry from Northeastern University. He then moved to Pennsylvania, completing a year of postdoctoral research at Lehigh University. After 5 years as Assistant Professor of Organic Chemistry at Lafayette College in Pennsylvania, he moved back to New England where he served in technical and management positions in high tech chemical companies. Shortly after his son, Dan, died of melanoma in 1998 at the age of 26, he founded the non-profit Melanoma Education Foundation and, since 2000, has devoted full time to the Foundation. The primary activity of the Foundation has been educating high school and middle school wellness teachers about melanoma and providing them with free online lessons to educate their students about self-detecting melanoma while it is curable. Prior to the pandemic over 1700 schools in all 50 U.S. states and Canada were using the lessons, resulting in saved lives of students, teachers and their loved ones. Recently outreach was expanded to U.S. and Canadian Rotary clubs in Eastern, Atlantic, and Central time zones. Since mid-2022 over 400 virtual sessions on early self-detection and prevention of melanoma have been conducted. Steve is a member of the Rotary Club of Peabody, Massachusetts.

Farms for Food Equity
Mar 26, 2025 6:00 PM
From his bio on the Farms for Food Equity site: Ken retired after forty years in the food business here in Maine. One of the things Ken most enjoyed was working with small businesses helping to bring their products to market. Ken is excited to bring his experience to Farms for Food Equity in our quest to help alleviate food insecurity by working with farmers to be more productive and prosperous here in Maine. Over 20 years ago Ken had the opportunity to hear George Mitchell speak about the work he did in Ireland to get peace in that country. At the end of his talk, he asked for questions. Ken says the question and answer that stood out to him over all these years was: "If you could do one thing in the world to make people stop fighting, what would it be. His answer was: "Give everyone a job!!" |
