Welcome
Here's what our Rotary Club and your Board of Directors gave to others in the 1996-97 Rotary Year:
- Sponsored the annual Senior Citizens' Christmas party
- Hosted the Cape Elizabeth High School Graduation postgraduation party
- Spent $4,5OO for stone benches and landscaping at the Joan Benoit-Samuelson statue in front of the Thomas Library in Cape Elizabeth
- Designed and purchased two "Welcome to South Portland" signs at a cost of $3671.99
- Contributed $500 to the DARE programs of South Portland and Cape Elizabeth
- Contributed $620 to Boy's and Girl's State
- Gave $200 to the Children's Reading Program
- Donated $10,404.76 to build a maternity hospital in Katmandu, Nepal
- Donated $2000 to The Rotary Foundation
- Donated $300 for the sound system at the South Portland Christmas Tree lighting ceremony
- Donated $350 to the Pine Tree Society for Crippled Children
- Sponsored four students (two each from South Portland and Cape Elizabeth) to the Rotary Youth Leadership Conference at Camp Sebago
- Gave four $1000 scholarships (two each to South Portland and Cape Elizabeth High Schools)
- Gave a $1000 scholarship to Southern Maine Technical College
- Contributed $1575 to a multimedia substance abuse prevention program
- Donated $2000 to the City of South Portland Parks and Recreation for improvements to Mill Creek Park
- Donated $175 to Spring Point Museum
- Donated $500 to the widow and family of a fallen fireman
- Hosted a Public Works Department "Thank You" luncheon for the Public Works employees of South Portland and Cape Elizabeth
- Donated $250 to the Portland Symphony Orchestra Education Fund
- Recognized and celebrated four local citizens with “Service Above Self' awards
- Donated $750 to Rotary District 7780's World Community Service Project
- Sponsored two students to a World Peace Conference at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater
- Donated $85 to the Cape Elizabeth Little League
- Donated $250 to the Ronald McDonald House
- Donated $250 to the Wayside Kitchen and helped staff that soup kitchen once a month, every month .
- Donated $1000 to "Heal the Children"
- Donated $395 to Camp Susan Curtis
- Donated $550 to the Southern Maine Council on Aging
- Donated $1100 to the South Portland School System for cameras and photography equipment for a new alternative education program
- Donated $300 to help a little girl build a car and enter the "Soapbox" Derby
- Presented Paul Harris fellowships to two local citizens who have devoted much of their lives to bettering their community
- Helped staff the annual "Shot in the Dark" Golf Tournament
- Donated $440 to a young man so that he could attend the “World Scholar-Athlete Conference"
- Donated $500 to our own Scholarship Fund, bringing that fund to over $19,000
- Donated $50 to the Boy's and Girl's Club of Portland
Here's how we were able to do all this:
- We raised more than $26500 by selling Christmas trees. Every member worked at least nine hours
- We sold food on weekends at five community events
- We sponsored a Bowl-a-thon
- We used funds accumulated over the past few years for our large Katmandu donation
- Our contribution to South Portland Parks and Recreation was primarily from an Environmental Fund donated by member Tony Wagner and his former employer, Betz Water Group
We also celebrated our Fellowship In Rotary:
- Our annual clambake, celebrated with the Casco Bay Sunrise Club at Fort Williams
- Our first "Greek Night", celebrating the food, culture, songs and prayers of our proud Greek members and their spouses.
- Two visits by Maine Storyteller Kendall Mone, one a joint meeting with the Scarborough Club.
- Attended the new Yarmouth Club Charter night and presented a gift.
- Honored the children and spouses who help us all year with a party and gifts
- Held a joint meeting with the Casco Bay Sunrise Club at the Embassy Suites
- Played Basketball
- Played Softball
- Bowled
- Celebrated a Charter Member's 80th birthday
- Honored two of our members with Paul Harris Fellowship.
- Celebrated the Paul Harris Fellowship of another member
- Used the Club's credits to make all members Sustaining Members of the Rotary Foundation
- Celebrated Vocational Service. Month by meeting at a local brewery and touring the facility
- Held several of our Wednesday night meetings at Southern Maine Technical College' McKernan Center
